Step-by-step explanation:

Let A =(2,4) & B (6,8).

Let P (x,y) divide AB in the ratio 1:3.

When division is internal,

x = 1×6 +3×2/1 + 3 ,y = 1×8 + 3×4 /1+3

x = 6+6/4 , y = 8 + 12/4

x = 12/4 , y = 20/4

x = 3 , y = 5

Hence the coordinates of the required point are (3,5).

When division is external , then

x = 1×6 - 3× 2 /1- 3 , y = 1× 8 -3×4 /1-3.

x = 6-6/2 , y = 8 - 12 /2

x = 0, y = 2

Hence the coordinates of the required point are (0,2).
