Discriminant is equal to (b^2-4 a*c) for the equation  ;-   a*x^2+b*x+c=0

so here in the equation px^2-(p+q)x +q = 0,  

                                       a=p,   b=  -(p+q)   and c=   q

       therefore discriminant here is    (-(p+p))^2 - 4*p*q

                                                          = p^2 + q^2 + 2pq -4pq

                                                          =p^2 + q^2 - 2pq
