Because of the square root expression in the brackets  cannot be  negative for real values of x.

2^x - 4^x + 2 = ≥ 0

If x = 1 , 2^x - 4^x + 2  = 2 - 4 + 2 = 0.

If x > 1,  4^x > 2^x , so 2^x - 4^x + 2 is negative.

For x < 1 , 4^x < 2^x so 2^x - 4x + 2 is positive.

So x  ≤ 1.
