Series Combination

  • The resistors are connected along the same line

  • The current remains same throughout

Let there be two resistors with potential differences V_1 \ and \ V_2 respectively

The net potential difference would be

 V = V_1 + V_2

From Ohm's Law,

V = IR

 \longrightarrow IR = IR_1 + IR_2 \\ \\ \longrightarrow IR = I(R_1 + R_2) \\ \\ \longrightarrow  R = R_1 + R_2

For 'n' number of resistors,

 R = R_1 + R_2 + \cdots + R_n
