Given :  Circuit Diagram

To Find : equivalent resistance.

Solution:

Key is not closed  between 10 Ω and 5 Ω  resistors

Hence Current will flow from 2 Ω and 3 Ω  resistors

2 Ω and 3 Ω are in series Hence 2 + 3 =  5 Ω

Req = 5 Ω

If Key is closed  between 10 Ω and 5 Ω  resistance :

2 Ω and 3 Ω are in series Hence 2 + 3 =  5 Ω

10 Ω and 5 Ω are in series Hence 10 + 5 =  15 Ω

Now 5Ω and 15 Ω are in parallels

=> 1/ Req  =  1/5  + 1/15

=> 1/Req = ( 3 + 1)/15

=> Req = 15/4

=> Req = 3.75 Ω

Explanation:

Given: Circuit diagram

To find: Equivalent resistance

Solution:

In the lower branch of the circuit there is a key which is open.(Mark as red in attached figure)

Thus, current will not flow in this branch.

Therefore,

Equivalent resistance of the circuit is series arrangement of 3 ohm and 2 ohm resistance.

R_{eq}=3+2\\\\R_{eq}=5\:\text{ohm}\\

Note*: If that key is closed then equivalent resistance may be find as shown:

Series resistance of first branch = 5 ohm

Series resistance of second branch = 15 ohm

Both branches are in parallel,thus

\frac{1}{R_{eq}}=\frac{1}{5}+\frac{1}{15}\\\\\frac{1}{R_{eq}}=\frac{4}{15}\\\\R_{eq}=\frac{15}{4}\:\text{ohm}\\

Final answer:

When key is open:

\bold{\green{R_{eq}=5\:\text{ohm}}}\\

When key/switch is closed:

\bold{\red{R_{eq}=\frac{15}{4}\:\text{ohm}}}\\

Hope it helps you.
