Let (x, y) be the coordinates of the point which divides the line segment joining A(-5, 11) and B(4, -7) in the ratio of 7:2.

therefore

x =  \frac{7 \times 4 + 2 \times ( - 5)}{7 + 2}  =  \frac{28  - 10}{9}  \\  \\  =  \frac{18}{9}  = 2 \\  \\ and \:  \\ y =  \frac{7 \times ( - 7) + 2 \times 11}{7 + 2}  =  \frac{ - 49 + 22}{9}  \\  \\  =  \frac{ - 27}{9}  =  - 3 \\  \\ therefre \: x = 2 \: and \: y =  - 3 \\  \\ hence \: required \: coordinates \: are \:

(2, -3)

hope it helps...
