Given :- Find first quartile for variable with observations 15,4,7,20,2,7,13 ?

Solution :-

First, we write data in increasing order :- 2, 4 , 7, 7 , 13, 15, 20 .

→ Total observation = 7 .

So,

→ Median = {(n + 1) / 2}th observation = (7 + 1)/2 = 8/2 = 4th observation = 7 .

then,

  • Lower half = 2, 4 and 7
  • Median = 7 .
  • Upper half = 13, 15 and 20 .

Therefore,

  • The first quartile, Q1, is the median of Lower half = 2 , 4 and 7 .

So,

→ Median of Lower half = {(n + 1) / 2}th observation = (3 + 1)/2 = (4/2) = 2nd observation = 4 .

Hence, first quartile(Q1) for variable with given observations is 4.
