• “winter was come”: This is the most obvious phrase which tells the readers that winter has arrived.
• “Not a crumb”: There is enough food available during the warm season. However, during winters, food becomes scarce since very little grows. In fact, that is why so many animals hibernate during winters. So, a lack of food is an indication of winters.
• “snow-covered ground”: It snows only during winters.
• “Not a flower”: Cold weather discourages the growth of flowers. Flowers mainly bloom during the spring and summer months.
• “Not a leaf”: Winter comes after autumn. During autumn trees shed their leaves. Thus, there are no leaves during winters.
