  • It they have common roots, then that root is their HCF.
  • If not, then their HCF is 1.

Factorisation:

x^2 - 3x + 2

=> x^2 - 2x - x + 2

=> x(x - 2) - 1(x - 2)

=> (x - 2)(x - 1)

=> x = 2 and 1

x^2 - 4x + 3

=> x^2 - 3x - x + 3

=> x(x - 3) - 1(x - 3)

=> (x - 1)(x - 3)

=> x = 1 and 3

Common root = 1

Thus, the HCF is (x - 1)
