Corrosion is the natural process when the metal reacts with the oxygen present in the air to produce metal oxides. This is the reason for the metals to get corroded. So, the Manufacturing companies will be using the corrosion resistance materials to increase the life of the metals.

The following are the items protected from corrosion that are used in houses.

Steel:

  • In the recent years, all the kitchen appliances are made of stainless steel like dishwashers, microwave ovens, fridges, Boilers, toasters etc.
  • The metal is covered in acrylic enamel in a light colour so that visibility is taken care.

Aluminium:

  • Aluminium is used in most of the houses as aluminium foils, doors, window frames etc.

Nickel:

  • It is used in toasters where the heating elements are made of nickel and chromium called nichrome. It is also used in plugs and chains.

Copper:

  • The recent water filters are accompanied with copper to provide medicinal properties for humans to consume.
  • These are also used in wiring but, due to high costs of the metal, usage is minimal in household wiring.
  • Copper is having high level of resistance to corrosion.

A corrosion resistance material when added to the environment, it decreases the corrosion. Let us understand how efficiently it is does using the following formula:

Corrosion resistance efficiency (%)

\bold{=100 \times \frac{\text {corrosion rate unresisted }-\text {corrosion rate resisted}}{\text {corrosion rate unresisted}}}

Where corrosion rate unresisted will be the environment without resistance

Corrosion rate resisted will be the environment with resistance.

Usually, a good corrosion resistance material will give 95%
