\frac{1}{r} = \frac{1}{10} + \frac{1}{40}

Multiplying 4 in denominator and numerator,

\frac{1}{r} = \frac{1(4)}{10(4)} + \frac{1}{40}

\frac{1}{r} = \frac{4}{40} + \frac{1}{40}

\frac{1}{r} = \frac{4 + 1}{40}

\frac{1}{r} = \frac{5}{40}

\frac{1}{r} = \frac{1}{8}

r = 8
