let given points be   A(2,3)   B(-1,k)   C(5,8)  

∵ ABC are collinear points

    ⇒  slope AB = slope BC

   ⇒  [ \frac{k-3}{-1-2} ]  =   [\frac{8-k}{5-(-1)}]    

   ⇒   \frac{(k-3)}{(-3)} = \frac{8-k}{6}  

   ⇒ 6(k-3) = -3(8-k)

   ⇒ 6k -18 = -24 +3k    

   ⇒  6k-3k = -24+18

   ⇒     3k = - 6

   ⇒       k = -2
