Given: 5 litre of a gas at S.T.P. ,  pressure is  1.013 × 10^5 N/m^2

To find: The kinitic energy?

Solution:

  • Now we now the formula for total kinetic energy in gas, that is:

                  K = 3 x N x k x T/2 ..................(i)

  • Here N = number of molecules

                  K = Boltzmann constant

                  T = temperature.

  • We also know the ideal gas law

                  PV = NkT

                  Here P = pressure = 1.013 × 10⁵ N/m²

                  V = volume of gas = 5 litres = 5 dm³ = 5 × 10⁻³ m³

  • So substituting the value of PV in (i), we get:

                  K = 3 x P x V / 2

  • Putting the values in it, we get:

                  K = 3 × 1.013 × 10⁵ N/m² × 5 × 10⁻³ m³/2

  • After solving it, we get:

                  K = 1519.5 J

                  K = 1.5195 kJ

Answer:

           So the kinetic energy of 5 litre of a gas at S.T.P. is 1.5195 kJ .
