5) let altitude be AB, base be BC and hypotenuse be AC. the triangle is right angled at B.

(AB)² + (BC)² = (AC)²

The triangle is isosceles, so AB=BC

2(AB)² = 512

(AB)² = 256

AB=BC=16 cm


6) let length of the ladder be AC, length of the wall be AB, and distance between wall and ladder be BC.

So, it forms a triangle which is right angled at B.

(AB)² + (BC)² =(AC)²

(15)² + (8)² = (AC)²

225 + 64 = (AC) ²

AC = 17 cm
