First 12 whole numbers are:
0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11

The sum is 66.

average =  \frac{sum \: of \: numbers}{no. \: of \: observations}

average =  \frac{66}{12}  =  \frac{11}{2} = 5.5
