PARTICIPATION OF WOMEN IN INDIAN NATIONAL MOVEMENT
Throughout years of Indian freedom struggle against the British colonialism, women played an important role. There are a huge number of women who took part in Indian freedom struggle. Some fought under the guidance of other great leaders like Surya Sen, Subhash Chandra Bose, and Karamchand Gandhi. Let us know about five of them in brief:
1. Lakshmibai, Rani of Jhansi, Jhansi:
Lakshmibai played an important role in Indian national movement, though her part in 1857 Rebellion was to gain her own position. Her attitude towards the British Raj made her a symbol of resistance.
2. Sarojini Naidu, Nightingale of India, Hyderabad:
Naidu fought for civil rights, women’s emancipation and her poetries written with pure patriotism dealt a great impact in Indian freedom struggle. She fought besides Gandhi in his non-violence approach.
3. Birkannya Pritilata Waddedar, West Bengal:
She was a member of Surya Sen’s revolutionary group. In 1932 she led a team of 15 freedom fighters to attack a European Club which had a sign board “Dogs and Indians not allowed”. She took potassium cyanide before she could be caught by officers.
4. Matangini Hazra, Bengal:
Often called as ‘Gandhi buri’, Matangini Hazra was a great patriotic woman. At the age of 72, she held the tri-colour flag in her hand and kept hailing the motherland. She was shot three times but would not leave the flag.
5. Bina Das, West Bengal:
On 6th February 1932, she fired five shots to assassinate Stanley Jackson, the then Governor of Bengal. She failed to kill the brut and was sentenced to nine years of rigorous imprisonment. In her later years, she took part in Quit India movement.
