- There are diverse forest types in India, ranging from dry thorn forests in central and western India to wet evergreen forests in northeast and southwest. There are 16 major types of forests including 221 sub types. The forests meet the demands of fuel wood, timber and fodder and provide livelihood to millions of people. However forests are neglected sector in the Indian economy and are undervalued in social and economic terms.
- India has managed to reduce the rate of deforestation and there has been an increase in the total forest cover in the country because of tree plantations by Forest survey of India. The quality of existing forest stock is deteriorating due to various factors.
- The northeastern state have forest cover which is 665 percent of its geographical area. The total forest cover in India is 21.34 percent of its geographical area which is equal to 708,273 square kilometres
