Answer:
After independence, India was led by one party rule (although we had democracy but that time Congress was the largest party because rooted in the pre-independence era). Nehru ji followed by Shastri ji and Indira Ji (in the first term) were able to rule without any external party support. India, had a first coalition government at the center under the leadership of Morarji Desai, in post-emergency era. At the state level, Indian had coalition government since 1967 because congress was weak. After series of incidents like 1962 humiliated war against China, death of Nehru ji, and internal struggle of Congress, all projected congress less competent. At and same time other parties like Jan Sangh, left parties, and Dravidian movement were emerging in different states. After emergency era, between 1977 to 1999, at the center, seven times coalition government was formed but it could not work. It was the worst time for independent India, in terms of political and economic stability. It also proved that economic success was not possible without stable governance at center.
