<b><I>When the Indigo Production disintegrated in Bengal ( after the 1857 Revolt ), the European Planters of Indigo conveyed their Operations to Bihar. With the Uncovering of Synthetic dyes in the late Nineteenth Century their Business was severly Affected, yet they managed to supplent their Production. When Mahatma Gandhi arrived back From South Africa, A peasant From Bihar persuaded Him To Visit Champaran And see the predicament of Indigo Cultivators There.

Mahatma Gandhi's Visit to Champaran 1917 manifested the inception of Champaran Movement against The Indigo Planters. European Planters were Oppressive towards Peasants and Forced them to grow Indigo and Sell Them off at Cheaper Rates. Gandhi Saw The Misery and Unbearable Conditions of Peasants When he Visited Champaran in 1917. District Officials Ordered him To leave the District but he complied their Orders and started the Satyagraha. It was a Conquest for Gandhi. A commision was then authorized to examine the Activities of Plantation Owners in Which Gandhi Too Was kept as a member.
