The earthquake which struck Gujarat on 26 January 2001, had an intensity of 7.7 on the MMS (Moment Magnitude Scale) and lasted for 2 minutes. This deadly earthquake killed about thirteen thousand people, flattening about four lakh homes.

The Indian Armed Forces as always, was quick to swing into action, mobilising emergency medical help, evacuations and rescue operations. It helped in delivering food and water to the affected areas.

Indian Armed Forces came up with Operation Sahayata to clear the aftermath of Gujarat Earthquake. Gujarat Earthquake that struck the most prominent regions of Gujarat had left with nearly 20,023 innocent soles. It has been estimated that the intensity of that earthquake was 7.7 as per the moment magnitude scale and lasted for almost two minutes.

Like the Uttarakhand flood disaster the India Army had involved many troops as much as possible for the rescue mission during Gujarat Earthquake.

The Indian Air Force made its contribution in the rescue mission with high level efficiency. Indian Air Force had involved IL -76 flights and heavy lift Mi helicopters for the rescue mission.
