Before the advent of modern technologies, ancient civilizations in the Indus Valley or the Nile River relied on primitive yet effective techniques to build dams and irrigate their land.
One of the oldest methods of bring water further from the river was to dig up small canals, by hand, which were led to the nearby fields to farm and grow crops.
In order to build dams to collect water or stop irrigation, people used simple blockage gates made up of wood or stone to stop the water.
In places where there were no nearby rivers or lakes for irrigation, people relied on an old system called the Qanat, which were small channels build to bring water from deep wells to the surface.
