Before firing both gun and bullet are at rest.so,total momentum of the gun before firing is equal to the zero.
let mass of bullet = m
let mass of gun = M
velocity of bullet when fired = v
velocity of gun when fired = V
then total momentum after the bullet fired = mv+MV
according to the law of conservation of momentum
0= mv+MV
-mv=MV
so,v = -mv/M
negative sign indicates that gun recoil in the direction opposite to that of the bullet.
