Explanation:

Modern GIS technologies use digital information, for which various digitized data creation methods are used. The most common method of data creation is digitization, where a hard copy map or survey plan is transferred into a digital medium through the use of a CAD program, and geo-referencing capabilities.

Until quite recently, a lot of GIS was taught rather abstractly. But the past couple of years has seen a real change in the extent to which GIS and RS products can be directly interfaced with MATLAB, R, and Python. To get the best value from those, you need CS concepts. This started much earlier with spatial databases, where fundamental database concepts are much more important to designing appropriate spatial queries. I am glad to see these changes are starting to be reflected in university GIS courses.
