The complete question is,

Find out the given cell is spontaneous or nonspontaneous H2/H^+ (P1) || H^+/H2 (P2) if P1 > P2

Given:

H2/H^+ (P1) || H^+/H2 (P2)  if P1 > P2

To find:

Find out the given cell is spontaneous or nonspontaneous H2/H^+ (P1) || H^+/H2 (P2) if P1 > P2

Solution:

From given, we have,

H2/H^+ (P1) || H^+/H2 (P2)  if P1 > P2

we use the formula,

E_{cell} = E0 - 0.0257/n ln Q

we use ln Q = 2.303 × log Q

so we have,

E_{cell} = E0 - 0.0257/n (2.303 × log Q)

E_{cell} = E0 - 0.0592/n log Q

from given, we have,

Q = P1/P2

∴ E_{cell} = E0 - 0.0592/n log P1/P2

as (P1 > P2)

∴ E_{cell} = 0 - (+ve)

∴ E_{cell} = -ve

we use the formula,

ΔG = -nfE

as E is negative, so we get,

ΔG = +ve

The value of ΔG indicates whether the reaction is spontaneous or nonspontaneous.

A positive ΔG represents a nonspontaneous reaction.

∴ H2/H^+ (P1) || H^+/H2 (P2) if P1 > P2 is a nonspontaneous reaction.
