Princely states were states that were not under the direct British rule and had a local ruler. By the year 1947, there were around 565 "princely states" in India. These states, had been "pampered" by the British, and had enjoyed "autonomy" with recognition as "separate units".

Explanation:

  • At the time of Independence, an 'Accession Instrument' was established in which the princely States were expected to coordinate with the Government of India and hand over the areas of defense, international affairs and communications. However, their sovereignty would be upheld in all other matters. Nevertheless, some states did not want to join India in fear of losing their independence. One such state was the Travancore princely state
  • The Kingdom became the "princely state" of the British Empire in the "early 19th century". In "socio-economic" terms, the Travancore Government had taken several steps. In British India, Travancore was a successful independent princely state with respectable successes in culture , politics, public service and social progress.
  • Sir "CP Ramaswamy Iyer", the "Diwan of Travancore" had declared when the British quit India, that Travancore would create itself as an autonomous nation. In "Travancore" this lead to a political battle (between communists of Travencore & him) and, a few days later, an "unsuccessful attempt"  (by a Kerala Socialist Party member).was made on "Sir CP Ramaswamy Iyer’s" life. He left the state & the Indian Union included Travancore after this occurrence.
