According to question father's age is thrice the son i.e "3x"

also sum of there ages is 96
~ x + 3x = 96
~ 4x = 96
~ x = 24

so 3x = 3 * 24 = 72

Hence age of son is 24 years and that of his father is 72 years.

Father'ss age three times of his son's,
x=3y.....(2)

From....(1)&(2)

3y+y=96
4y=96
y=96/4
y=24

Son's age is 24 years

x=3y

x=72

Father's age is 72 years
