Narmada Bachao Andolan, Sardar sarovar Dam: In 1979 government took decision for raising height of sardar sarovar Dam motivated by it will provide water to the about 40 million people.


In 1985 medha Patkar who had lead this agitation visited Sardar Sarovar dam and its came to the picture that they did not fulfilled basic environmental conditions.

There were lots of people around which will be affected by this construction but there is no planning for that and they didn't check land records. That's why this Movement took place.

This is just a Simple and Major example of Dams agitation. There are so many dams like assam dams have agitation against them. They have different circumstances but the main point of agitation is that it will harm livelihood of people and affect geological factors of land.

Dams are physical structures that are constructed over rivers for the purpose of storage. They also act as barriers and create reservoirs. The reservoirs are used to irrigate fields and also stop flooding.

In India,  

Dams have been constructed from the period of the kings till today. There are almost 3250 dams all across India.

Reason for agitation:

  • Sediments left behind the dam spoil the natural habitat.
  • Altering the natural flow of  water will result in seismic risk.
  • The construction of dams also bring in differences between the states.
