Be it in novels like City of Joy, Hard Times or Sons and Lovers, migration has always been a very serious issue of debate among writers, philosophers and economists.

History has recorded the mass migration of men from villages to cities over the years. The Industrial Revolution was an important factor that affected migration.

India has also witnessed its share of migration. Owing to the inflicted famines by the ruthless Britishers poor villagers had to migrate in search of work.

In the current scenario City Life is full of materialistic bliss. Finding jobs, educational opportunities, forms of entertainment are much more in city life than in villages.

Most village girls dream like Sister Carrie and run away from home to the city to pursue their dreams.

Migration leads to a drastic imbalance between urban and rural population. Villages become almost deserted. Agriculture suffers drastically.

Many Indian villages have reflected an alarming drop in young population. Most youngsters flock to the city leaving behind the aged and ailing. This causes a major retardation in rural growth.

The Government has to sit with the Panchas and work out a solution to keep the young from flocking to cities. Job opportunities have to be created in villages. Agricultural entrepreneurship can be encouraged.

Group study exchange among countries can be encouraged to give exposures to our villagers. Civic facilities have to be improved in villages.

After all villages are more eco-friendly and the pride and building block of India. We must prevent migration to the cities to save them.
