There are the following social causes-

1. It was known that the greased paper was made from the fat of the cows and pigs. This angered the Indians who just needed a revolt.

2. Social reforms introduced by british like abolition of sati and widow remarrige act and the opening of western education.

3. Christianity arose in India as the Britishers had been established there. So there were many Hindus who transformed themselves into Christians. This hurt the Hindus as they left their own natural caste. Also the abolition of certain reforms such as sati, child marriage,etc

4. Policy of racial discrimination between British and Indians.
