Answer: Some of the sources of water that can be found around your locality can be tubewell, handpump, tap water from municipality or from tankers. In order to check the quality of that water, one can do two types of tests. First is through physical verification i.e. looking at the colour of water, smelling it to check if there is an odour, to check the presence of any  germs and insect. Secondly, we can check the presence of total dissolved solubles with the help of a TDS meter.
