Studies estimate that Hindu temples built in the Nagara, Dravida and Vesara style were built in the 7th century or earlier. These styles were followed for aesthetics as well as practicality. The temples were constructed using material and styles, to withstand harsh weather conditions of each place, where they were located.

These temples were built by Hindu kings, to pay obeisance to the Hindu Gods and seeking protection of their kingdoms, from enemies and natural calamities.
