The completion of digestion takes place in small intestine.

An overview of digestion in small intestine :

  • Muscularis layer of intestine ensures that the incoming chyle mixes well with pancreatic and intestinal secretions.

  • Proteins are degraded into dipeptides.

\sf Proteins \xrightarrow{Trypsinogen/Chymotrypsinogen/Carboxypeptidases} Dipeptides

  • Carbohydrates are reduced to monosaccharides by pancreatic amylases.

  • Fats are reduced to monoglycerides and fatty acids by lipases and bile salts.

Gastric Juice is Hydrochloric Acid which is secreted by parietal cells of the stomach.

  • HCl facilities the activation of pepsinogen.

  • \sf Fe^{3+} \xrightarrow{HCl} Fe^{2+}

Bile Juice consists Bile Pigments, Bile salts, cholesterol and phospholipids.

Glucose and Fructose are produced in the intestine through the following ways :

  • \sf Maltose \xrightarrow{Maltase} Glucose + Fructose \\
  • \sf Lactose \xrightarrow{Lactase} Glucose + Galactose \\
  • \sf Sucrose \xrightarrow{Sucrase} Glucose + Fructose \\

Fructose is absorbed by Facilitated Diffusion while Glucose is absorbed into the main blood stream by Passive Diffusion.
