Answer:

p-q = -1

-q = -1-p

q=p+1

Then, we have

p+q = p + (p + 1)

p+q = 2p + 1

We want to isolate one of the 2 variables (p or q), as we have a value for q, we will isolate q.

(p+q)^2 = (2p + 1)^2

p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 4p^2 + 4p + 1

2pq + q^2 = 3p^2 + 4p + 1

As q = p + 1,

2p(p+1) + q^2 = 3p^2 + 4p + 1

2p^2+2p + q^2 = 3p^2 + 4p + 1

q^2 = p^2 + 2p + 1

q^2 - p^2 = 2p +1

If p^2 - q^2 = 4, then q^2 - p^2 = -4

2p + 1 = -4

2p = -5

p = -2.5

q = -2.5 + 1 (q = p + 1)

q = -1.5

p+q = -2.5 + -1.5

p+q = -4
