RMS Velocity

Given

Velocity of three molecules are 10km/s, 20km/s and 30km/s.

To Find

RMS of given three molecules

Solving

Square Given Velocities

10² = 100

20² = 400

30² = 900

Take Mean of these three Numbers

Mean = ( 100 + 400 + 900) / 3

Mean = 1400 / 3

Now, take root of obtained number

Root of 1400 / 3 is

√( 1400 / 3 )

21.60

Answer

So, the RMS Velocity of given three molecules is 21.60 km/s.

Root Mean Square ( RMS ) Velocity

It is a velocity which gives us central or average of the molecule's speed. It is used, as net velocity of all molecules is taken as zero due to their randomness.

We solve it by going just opposite of its name, first we square numbers then take mean of obtained numbers and finally we take root of the obtained mean.
