Answering the question: Find the smallest 5 digit number which is exactly divisible by 279.

You could multiply 279 until the answer was >4 digits. I’ll do that in the simplest fashion. 1 x 279 = 00279. Then again there is a smaller number:00000. oh my you can go further down that same rabbit hole and say -00279. uh oh, it’s not done. If I went 36 times down that hole it would be -10044. but that the largest 5 digit negative number…go down farther. In fact, we’ll go down 358 times to -99882. I think that might be the smallest 5 digit number which is exactly divisible by 279. There are 5 digits and if you subscribe to the notion that a negative is smaller than a positive then it meets the criteria. If, however, you like the notion that smaller means closer to zero then maybe you like one of the previously mentioned intermediate answers.
