It is given that light travels with the speed of 1.4 x 10^8 m / s in that medium.

And,

From the properties of refraction, we know that the refractive Index of a transparent medium is the ratio of speed of light in air to the speed of light in that medium.

Due to this property,

Refractive Index of that medium should be ( speed of light in air ) / ( speed of light in that medium )

We know that speed of light in air is 3 x 10^8 m / s.

Therefore,

= > Refractive Index of that medium = ( 3 x 10^8 m / s ) / ( 1.4 x 10^8 m / s )

= > Refractive Index of that medium = 3 / 1.4

= > Refractive Index of that medium = 2.14 ( approx )

Hence,

Refractive Index of that medium is 2.14

Answer:-

Given that;

Speed of Light in a Medium = 1.4 × 10^8 m/s.

& We know that,

Speed of Light in Air = 3 × 10^8 m/s.

By the Formula,

Refractive Index of the Medium = Speed of Light in Air / Speed of light in that Medium.

=> R.I = (3 × 10^8 ) / ( 1.4 × 10^8)

=> R.I = 2.14.

Hence,

The Refractive Index of that Medium is 2.14.
