Find the angle of elevation of sun at different times as at 9.00 am, 2.00 pm and 5.00pm. For this project you need a stick about 100 cm long . At the given times you put the stick vertical and measure its length of shadow. Then using tanx = length of stick/ length of shadow . find the value of x using trigonometric table given in your maths book at the end.

Given :  A stick of 100 cm

To Find : angle of elevation of sun at different times as at 9.00 am, 2.00 pm and 5.00pm.

Solution:

This is an practical experiment

Result will vary depending upon location where it is being performed

ad day on which this performed

At 9 : 00 AM  - Shadow length  approx    100 cm

tanx = length of stick/ length of shadow

Tan x   =  100/100

=> Tanx = 1

=> x =  45°

At 2 : 00 PM  - Shadow length  approx    60 cm

Tan x   =  100/60

=> Tanx = 5/3

=> x = 59°

At  5 : 00 PM  - Shadow length  approx    60 cm

Tan x   =  100/170

=> Tanx =10/17

=> x = 30.5°
