What are figure of speech?

Figure of speech are literary devices used mainly in poetries to enhance the poetic effects . These are many , but some of the most common are :

  • Simile : Figure of speech in which comparison is made between two things with use of words "as" or "like".

  • Metaphor : Comparison is made between two objects but without usage of words "like" or "as".

  • Alliteration : A letter or sound is repeated simultaneously in a line . For example : in last sentence , the letter d is repeated in dove died .

  • Personification : A non - human thing is given a human quality and hence personified .

  • Irony : The meaning of the words are exact opposite to literal meaning .

  • Hyperbole : The exaggeration is made in the line . For example : He filled the river with tears .

  • Pun : A sentence carrying two meanings .
