I was a child, we were living in Patna. Among others, we had a milkman, who would

come every morning to give milk. He would come on a bicycle, ring the bell, and shout.

Buddhi Singh used to carry two big milk cans, hanging from the sides of the carrier of his

cycle. There would be two small cans hanging from the handle of the cycle along with a

small measuring cup with a long handle.

On hearing his shout, we children would run out with glasses in our hands. After giving the

regular quota of milk to mother, he would pour small quantities of milk into our glasses

everyday. No amount of rebukes would stop him from giving us free milk every morning. He

would say that children are God’s gift and he was serving God by doing what he did.

Buddhi Singh appeared to be a deeply religious man. He was the milk vendor for almost

every house in the neighbourhood. Mother was fond of him. We were also happy.

Buddhi Singh had been supplying milk for years. Then one day everything changed. People

started complaining that the quality of milk had gone down. Buddhi Singh would not agree,

saying that something like that could never happen. Things remained quiet for a few days.

Then the complains again started pouring in. The neighbours decided to call Buddhi Singh

and confront him together. He was summoned and everybody confronted him.

Finally, he broke down and admitted that he had been mixing water in the milk regularly.

His confidence level had gone up, resulting in his increasing the ratio of water in the milk

gradually. The neighbours decided that nobody would buy milk from Buddhi Sigh any

longer.

Buddhi Singh was shocked at the imminent loss of business and his livelihood. He touched

the elder’s feet, cried and beg forgiveness. It was decided that he should be given another

chance to mend his ways so he was forgiven. Buddhi Singh was happy and so were the

children at the prospect of getting free milk every morning noisy​
