Answer: 120 cm²

Let the rectangle be named as ABCD,

Now the length of the breadth is given as 8 cm.

Since, we know that a rectangle has parallel sides, hence they make 90° with each other.

The diagonal is of length 17 cm.

Hence we obtain a triangle ABC with the 90° at B.

Therefore, using Pythagoras theorem, we can find the missing side BC (i.e. the length) :

(AB)² + (BC)² = (AC)²

(AC)² - (AB)² = (BC)²

(17)² - (8)² = (BC)²

289 - 64 = (BC)²

225 = (BC)²

∴ BC = 15 cm

Hence Area of the rectangle is given by L×B

= 15 × 8

= 120 cm
