let hypo. of right angled triangle be x then

in right angled triangle, by Pythagoras theorem

16^2+12^2=x^2

256+144=x^2

400=x^2

20=x

now,

area of right angled triangle=1/2×base×height

=1/2×12×16=96cm^2

and, area of square= side ×side

20×20=400cm^2

therefore, area of shaded region=area of square-area of right angled triangle

= 400-96=304cm^2
