as the sides of the unshaded region are given and we can use this in pythagoras theorem.

as we know that square of hypotenuse is equal to square of side and perpendicular. therefore take out the hypotenuse from it.

after taking out the hypotenuse, this hypotenuse will become the height of the bigger triangle. now take out the area of the bigger triangle.

now they are asking the area of shaded region. therefore the area of the shaded region will be the difference of area of bigger triangle and area of smaller one.
