let name the point above "A" as F

:. area of DEF = 1/2 X B X H    =  1/2 X 3 X 3   =   3 cm sq

area of ABCD =  L X B = (DE + EC) X  ( DF + FA )

= (3+4) X (3+1)   =   7 X 4  = 28cm sq

therefore area of shaded area = ABCD - ( ECB + DEF )  

= 28 - (6+3)   = 28 - 9  = 19 cm sq
