Let side be = x

In the given figure:

By Pythagoras Theorem in Triangle ADC:

AC^2 = AD^2 + CD^2

=> 12^2 = x^2 + x^2

=> 144 = 2x^2

=> x^2 = 72

We know that area of a square = square of its side = x^2

We got x^2 = 72

Thus, area = 72 sq cm
