average \: speed \:  =  \frac{total \: distance}{total \: time}

Total displacement = Area under v-t curve

= ½×4×8 + ½×6×8 = 16 + 24 = 40 m

But, in this case total displacement and total distance will be equal, because the car is not retracing its path. Why is it not retracing its path ? It's because velocity of car does not become -ve.

So, average speed = 40/10 = 4m/s
