Let C = circumference and D = diameter.

Given that C = 5 inches, also that C = Pi x D, find D.

Rearranging C = Pi x D to obtain D = C/ Pi, and substituting 5 for D and 3.1416 for Pi, I obtain the formula:

D = 5/(3.1416) from which I calculate the diameter to be 1.5915494 inches.

I round this down to 1.5915 inches to obtain my answer: The diameter is 1.5915 inches.
