You can also do it by just looking at the given point (-2,5) . The question says that the required point is on y-axis which gives a big hint that the x coordinate with be 0...
Now, look at the y-coordinate of the given point, then y-coordinate of the required point will be the same i.e, 5 as the question asks shortest distance which clearly shows that the points must be on same line.

To find the nearest point just draw a ⊥ to the axis (given).
here we have to find the point on y-axis which is nearest to the point (-2,5)
so,drawing a ⊥ to y-axis , point on y-axis means x=0 and ∵ drawing from y=5
nearest value of y=0. ∴nearest point is (0,5)
