The word “Aryan” since the 19th century has been used wrongly with a racial connotation. The word is derived from the Sanskrit word “Arya” meaning noble. Any person, whatever his race could be a noble person. After Europeans discovered the greatness of ancient India from the translation of Indian Sanskrit texts of profound value, such as the Rig Veda, they (in particular the British and the Germans) decided to claim ownership. It was Sir William Jones who first translated the Indian Sanskrit texts. Because of the many Sanskrit words which he found in European languages such as Latin and Greek Sir William claimed that Sanskrit and these European languages were derived for a Proto Indo European (PIE) source. For over 2 centuries linguists could not have found such a source language, neither was any geographical area pinpointed where that language was spoken. Sir William was wholly incorrect in his assumption. The Sanskrit words in the European languages were due to large numbers of Sanskrit-speaking Indians that moved to the West in very remote times. Because of their cohabitation with western people over centuries Sanskrit words were borrowed. So the idea that Sanskrit was taken to India by “Aryan” invaders could not be proved. The “Aryan Invasion Theory” was a concoction by the British. They had employed the Sanskrit scholar, Max Muller, at Oxford University for the purpose of translating Indian texts of profound value. Muller was the person who was instrumental in concocting the AIT stating that the invaders went to India with their Sanskrit language and that they were the authors of the Vedic literature. Thus, while Sir William concocted the PIE, Muller invented the AIT. There is no factual basis in both. When Europeans, in particular the Germans, became aware of Ancient Indian greatness, they thought that they could delink themselves from the hitherto semitic (Jewish) connection and claim a connection with “Aryans” in India. This resulted in Germans under Adolf Hitler asserting that the German people were “Aryans” and his intention was to create a super race with blue eyes and blonde hair. The consequence of this policy was the killing of 6 million Jews in Germany and other countries nearby. Because of what happened in Germany during and preceding World War II, the word “Aryan” is hardly in circulation in Europe.
