We know that

tan x = sin x / cos x

now differentiate both side

d/d x (tan x) = d/d x (sin x /cos x)

using formulae u/v=(u’v-v’u)/v^2

now

(cos x * cos x - (-sin x) * sin x )/cos x * cos x

=cos^2 x + sin^2 x / cos^2 x

=1 / cos ^2x

d/d x (tan x)=sec^2 x
