case-1: Single discount of 40% = $\frac{40}{100} \times 2500 = 1000$

case-2: successive discount of 36% and 4%

36% of 2500 = $\frac{36}{100} \times 2500 = 900$

then price becomes = 2500- 900 = 1600

4% of 1600 = $\frac{4}{100} \times 1600 = 64$

total discount = 900 + 64 = 964

So a single discount gives you a discount of Rs. 1000 whereas the successive discount gives you a discount of Rs. 964
